The objective of the UNDP/GEF Korea Wetland Project is to develop policies to protect, systematically manage wetlands, a valuable ecological resource for Korea.

History

The UNDP/GEF Korea Wetland Project was established under an agreement between the Korean Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The Project began in September 2004. SMUs for Geum River Basin and Nakdong River Basin began to operate in 2006, and the SMU for the Han and Imjin rivers in 2008.

Organization Structure

Main Activities

(1) To establish public-private partnerships for wetlands management

  • To convene a National Wetlands Committee, Project Steering Committee (PSC), and Scientific Advisory Committee
(2) To develop and execute better policies to protect and manage wetlands.
  • To establish knowledge and tools that will strengthen development of wetlands planning and policies:
    Developing high-level programs for wetlands research, wetlands surveys, and organizing an information database, Establishing a National Wetlands Inventory by categorizing and evaluating individual wetlands.
  • To draft a Basic National Plan for Wetlands Protection and Guidelines for Provincial Planning for Wetlands Protection.
(3) To establish and strengthen wetlands networks and international cooperation
  • To participate in international conferences related to wetlands and the environment.
  • To participate in international networks of organizations charged with responsibility for wetlands and the environment.
  • To encourage policy makers to participate in international conferences for capacity building.
(4) To build wetlands management capacity at demonstration sites.
  • To develop incentives for wetlands protection and wise use at demonstration sites in the Nakdong River Basin, Geum River Basin, and Han-Imjin River Basin.
  • To establish public-private partnerships for wetlands management at demonstration sites and to hold technical advisory workshops.
(5) To revitalize public awareness, training and public relations activities for wetlands conservation
